Principal Investigator
Dr. Tao Huan
Associate Professor in Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry at the University of British Columbia and Canada Research Chair in Metabolomics and Exposomics.
Profile
Advancing metabolomics from instrument-level measurement to biological interpretation.
Dr. Huan leads a multidisciplinary research program that advances the analytical performance of mass spectrometry in global metabolomics and brings metabolomics into systems biology. His group develops analytical and bioinformatic technologies for broader metabolomic coverage, improved metabolite identification, and more confident interpretation of complex biological and environmental samples.
He received his Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Alberta, where he worked with Dr. Liang Li on chemical isotope labelling liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry-based metabolomics. He then completed postdoctoral training with Dr. Gary Siuzdak at The Scripps Research Institute, developing metabolomics-guided systems biology approaches for understanding disease mechanisms. He joined the Department of Chemistry at UBC as an Assistant Professor in 2018 and became Associate Professor with tenure in 2024.
Honors, Awards, and Recognition
Selected recent recognition for contributions to metabolomics, exposomics, analytical chemistry, and measurement science.
2025Rising Star in Environmental Research, American Chemical Society
The Rising Star in Environmental Science recognition by the American Chemical Society honors exceptional early-career researchers who are advancing the frontiers of environmental science through innovative, high-impact work. Recipients are selected based on their scientific creativity, emerging leadership, and contributions to addressing critical environmental challenges. In 2025, a total of 10 individuals were selected worldwide.
2025The President's Award, International Metabolomics Society
The President's Award recognizes outstanding achievements in metabolomics. While research contributions are of primary importance, other contributions, including to the teaching of metabolomics and service to the field or the society, are also strongly considered. This award is available for Society members who have been awarded a PhD no more than 5-10 years prior to the closing date for nominations. Medal winners have the opportunity to give a keynote presentation during the Society conference the same year they receive the award. Conference registration, and reasonable travel and hotel expenses, are reimbursed by the Society.
2025Fred Beamish Award, Canadian Society for Chemistry
The Fred Beamish Award is a prestigious recognition presented by the Canadian Society for Chemistry. It was established in 1984 in honor of Professor Fred Beamish, a distinguished Canadian analytical chemist known for his contributions to chemical analysis and education. The Fred Beamish Award is presented to an individual who demonstrates innovation in research in analytical chemistry, where the research is anticipated to have significant potential for practical applications.
2024UBC Killam Faculty Research Award
The UBC Killam Faculty Research Award is a prestigious internal award presented by UBC to recognize outstanding research and scholarly contributions by faculty members. It is part of the broader Killam Program, established through the Killam Trusts to support advanced education and research. Each year, ten UBC Killam Research Prizes are awarded annually to top campus researchers, with funds provided from the Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Fund for Advanced Studies established through a bequest from the late Dorothy J. Killam.
2024Rising Stars in Measurement Science, American Chemical Society
American Chemical Society Measurement Science Au recognizes early-career scientists from across the globe who are making significant contributions to the field of measurement science. With over 300 nominations, 20 Rising Stars were chosen and featured in a virtual special issue in the journal ACS Measurement Science Au.
2024Canada Research Chair in Metabolomics and Exposomics, Government of Canada
Tier 2 Canada Research Chairs, tenable for five years and renewable once, are for exceptional emerging researchers acknowledged by their peers as having the potential to lead in their field. For each Tier 2 Chair, the institution receives $100,000 annually for five years, with an additional $20,000 annual research stipend for first-term Tier 2 Chairs. Dr. Huan was selected for this chair position following a competitive nomination process by the Department of Chemistry and the Faculty of Science at UBC.
2023Metabolites Young Investigator Award, Metabolites
This prize is provided by the journal Metabolites. It is a competitive award given annually to one young investigator in recognition of excellent achievement in the field of metabolomics. All nominations are assessed by an Award Evaluation Committee led by the journal's Editor-in-Chief.
2023Michael Smith Health Research BC Scholar Award
This Scholar Program supports outstanding early-career biological researchers in British Columbia as they establish independent research careers, form their own research teams, and develop research programs that advance cutting-edge health solutions. The Scholar Program is one of Health Research BC's flagship funding opportunities.
2022MANA Early Career Rising Star Award, Metabolomics Society of North America
The MANA Early Career Award is a competitive annual award for the most accomplished Early Career Members. It is awarded annually to a member whose work has exhibited exceptional novelty or pushed the boundaries of metabolomics, or whose early-career efforts after obtaining a PhD, MD, or MD-PhD have resulted in sustained, substantial, and noteworthy contributions to the field. The winner is selected to give an oral presentation at the MANA conference. Dr. Huan received this award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry-based metabolomics, specifically in the development of analytical tools for data acquisition and feature extraction, and bioinformatic tools for improving data quality and facilitating metabolite annotation.
2022Young Investigator Award, Chinese American Society for Mass Spectrometry
This award recognizes rising stars and outstanding researchers in the field of mass spectrometry. It is designed to identify and acknowledge young scientists who have made a significant impact in their early career stage. Candidates from academia, industry, and government laboratories are considered. Awardees are announced at the CASMS Annual Conference.
